Q1Q1269-273OBJECTIVES: Identify the possibility that alcohol consumption represents an incremental factor in healthcare costs of patients involved in traffic accidents. METHODS: Data of people admitted into three major health institutions from an intermediate city in Colombia was collected. Socio-demographic characteristics, health care costs and alcohol consumption levels by breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) methodology were identified. Generalized linear models were applied to investigate whether alcohol consumption acts as an incremental factor for healthcare costs. RESULTS: The average cost of healthcare was 878 USD. In general, there are differences between health care costs for patients with positive blood alcohol level compared with those who had negative levels. Univariate analysis shows that the average cost of care can be 2.26 times higher (95% CI: 1.20-4.23), and after controlling for patient characteristics, alcohol consumption represents an incremental factor of almost 1.66 times (95% CI: 1.05-2.62). CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol is identified as a possible factor associated with the increased use of direct health care resources. The estimates show the need to implement and enhance prevention programs against alcohol consumption among citizens, in order to mitigate the impact that traffic accidents have on their health status. The law enforcement to help reduce driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages could help to diminish the economic and social impacts of this problem

BACKGROUND: Studies that deepen in the aspects related to quality of life (QoL) of elderly with dementia living in nursing homes in Spain are needed. The aim of this study is to describe the QoL and related aspects in this population. METHODS: Sample of 525 people with dementia older than 60 years in 14 nursing homes. QoL was assessed with EQ-5D (both index and visual analogue Scale, EQ-VAS) and Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease(QoL-AD, resident and caregiver versions). Other scales were also applied: Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR), Barthel Index, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), modified version of the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G), Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) and Cognitive Mini-exam (MEC). To determine the relationship between the variables of interest, Pearson's correlation coefficient and the analysis of variance (Student's t test) were used. RESULTS: QoL scales displayed correlations from 0.17 to 0.50 between them. Qol-AD-caregiver scored higher in men with lower disability and depression 28.94 ± 4.91, 29.91 ± 4.74 and 28.44 ± 4.94, respectively;(p < 0.01), and correlated 0.45 with Barthel Index and -0.36 with CSDD. Qol-AD-resident scored higher in absence of depression (29.29 ± 6.03). EQ-5D Index scored higher in men (0.19 ± 0.33) with less disability (0.42 ± 0.32) and its coefficient of correlation with Barthel Index was 0.79. CONCLUSIONS: Functional state and depression are associated with quality of life in older people with dementia living in nursing homes.S

Spatial control of potato tuberization by the TCP transcription factor BRANCHED1b

The control of carbon allocation, storage and usage is critical for plant growth and development and is exploited for both crop food production and CO2 capture. Potato tubers are natural carbon reserves in the form of starch that have evolved to allow propagation and survival over winter. They form from stolons, below ground, where they are protected from adverse environmental conditions and animal foraging. We show that BRANCHED1b (BRC1b) acts as a tuberization repressor in aerial axillary buds, which prevents buds from competing in sink strength with stolons. BRC1b loss of function leads to ectopic production of aerial tubers and reduced underground tuberization. In aerial axillary buds, BRC1b promotes dormancy, abscisic acid responses and a reduced number of plasmodesmata. This limits sucrose accumulation and access of the tuberigen protein SP6A. BRC1b also directly interacts with SP6A and blocks its tuber-inducing activity in aerial nodes. Altogether, these actions help promote tuberization underground. The work of P.C. was funded by BIO2014-57011-R (MINECO), BIO2017-84363-R (Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation) (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/) and FESF investing in your future. Expression of the Intracellular COPT3-Mediated Cu Transport Is Temporally Regulated by the TCP16 Transcription Factor

[EN] Copper is an essential element in plants. When scarce, copper is acquired from extracellular environment or remobilized from intracellular sites, through members of the high affinity copper transporters family COPT located at the plasma membrane and internal membrane, respectively. Here, we show that COPT3 is an intracellular copper transporter, located at a compartment of the secretory pathway, that is mainly expressed in pollen grains and vascular bundles. Contrary to the COPT1 plasma membrane member, the expression of the internal COPT3 membrane transporter was higher at 12 h than at 0 h of a neutral photoperiod day under copper deficiency. The screening of a library of conditionally overexpressed transcription factors implicated members of the TCP family in the COPT3 differential temporal expression pattern. Particularly, in vitro, TCP16 was found to bind to the COPT3 promoter and down-regulated its expression. Accordingly, TCP16 was mainly expressed at 0 h under copper deficiency and induced at 12 h by copper excess. Moreover, TCP16 overexpression resulted in increased sensitivity to copper deficiency, whereas the tcp16 mutant was sensitive to copper excess. Both copper content and the expression of particular copper status markers were altered in plants with modified levels of TCP16. Consistent with TCP16 affecting pollen development, the lack of COPT3 function led to altered pollen morphology. Furthermore, analysis of copt3 and COPT3 overexpressing plants revealed that COPT3 function exerted a negative effect on TCP16 expression. Taken together, these results suggest a differential daily regulation of copper uptake depending on the external and internal copper pools, in which TCP16 inhibits copper remobilization at dawn through repression of intracellular transporters. This work has been supported by grants BIO2017-87828-C2-1-P (LP) and the TRANSPLANTA Consortium (CSD2007-00057) from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and by FEDER funds from the European Union. Get PDF
Today manychildrenhave to facevariousadverse situationsin their daily lives.Resilience isan ability thatcan helpchildren recuperateandovercome adversityand evenallows them toemerge stronger fromthis situation. There are severalprotective factorsinternal and externalwhich facilitates the developmentofthiscapacity. In the present study we describedthe most important factorsassociated withresiliencein studentsof General Basic Education. Also briefly discussed such topics as: the history and definition of resilience, resilient characteristics of children and the importance and building resilience in school. To make this research we used a descriptive methodology. We found that the most important internal factors in building resilience in children are: adequate self-esteem, social competence, empathy, problem solving ability, autonomy, sense of purpose, confidence, hope and optimism. And most important external factors are identified as follows: positive role models, having relationships and support within and outside the family, have a stable and positive bond with at least one person, positive school climate and teacher support.Licenciada en Psicología Educativa. Quality of life by proxy and mortality in institutionalized older adults with dementia

No full text
Aim: This study aimed at analyzing the effect of quality of life (QoL) on mortality in older adults with dementia living in long-term care facilities. Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was carried out on 412 residents aged older than 60 years, diagnosed with dementia according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition. Besides assessment of QoL (EQ-5D index by proxy) and perceived health status (EQ-VAS), baseline measurements included severity of dementia (Clinical Dementia Rating Scale [CDR]), comorbidity (number of self-reported chronic conditions), disability evaluation (Barthel Index), cognitive state (Mini Examen Cognoscitivo, a validated and modified Spanish version of the Mini-Mental State Examination) and depression (Cornell Depression Scale for Dementia). Sociodemographic and clinical variables were analyzed as potential effect modifiers and confounders in the relationship between QoL and mortality using a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: After an 18-month follow up, 138 residents had died. Adjusting for CDR and Barthel Index, the odds of mortality were multiplied by 0.25 (95% CI 0.09-0.70) and 0.79 (95% CI 0.26-2.42) for every unit of change in the EQ-5D index in the residents with Cornell score <6 and ≥6, respectively. Conclusion: The present study suggests that the effect of QoL on mortality in institutionalized adults with dementia should take into account the presence or absence of depression. In addition, residents with a greater disability and more advanced dementia should be a target for interventions in rehabilitation care

Active Ageing and Quality of Life: factors associated with participation in leisure activities among institutionalized older adults, with and without dementia, in Spain

Objectives: Active ageing, considered from the perspective of participation in leisure activities, promotes life satisfaction and personal well-being. The aims of this work are to define and explain leisure activity profiles among institutionalized older adults, considering their sociodemographic characteristics and objective and subjective conditions in relation to their quality of life. Methods: Two samples of institutionalized people aged 60 and over were analysed together: 234 older adults without dementia and 525 with dementia. Sociodemographic, economic, family and social network, and health and functioning variables were selected. Cluster analysis was applied to obtain activity profiles according to the leisure activities, and ordinal regression models were performed to analyse factors associated to activity level. Results: The sample was clustered into three groups of people: active (27%), moderately active (35%) and inactive people (38%). In the final regression model (Nagelkerke pseudo R2 D 0.500), a higher level of activity was associated with better cognitive function (Pfeiffer scale), self-perceived health status and functional ability, as well as with a higher frequency of gathering with family and friends, and higher educational level. Conclusion: The decline in physical and mental health, the loss of functional capabilities and the weakening of family and social ties represent a significant barrier to active ageing in a context of institutionalization. This research was funded by the Research Center for Neurological Diseases Foundation (CIEN Foundation) [Ref. Introduction. This article is part of the strand of empirical studies on infotainment and presents a characterisation of the infotainment content broadcast by the Spanish mainstream DTT channels. Method. The study is based on the analysis of the infotainment content included in the programming of the six most important mainstream DTT channels in Spain, and the content analysis of the prime time infotainment content. Results. Infotainment occupies a privileged position in the mainstream television channels but there are significant differences across networks. The main distinctive features that characterise infotainment are humour, drama and the use of technical resources to increase the sensationalism of images. Discussion. Infotainment is consolidated as a relevant macro-genre whose presence ranges from 34.91% (in La Sexta) to 8.12% (in La 2), being the magazine and debate shows the dominant formats. Surprisingly, the presence of infotainment in TVE 1 (18.10%) is higher than in the networks Antena 3 and Cuatro.Introducción.
